Start your Charleston vacation where the city began, Charles Towne Landing. Before Charleston became the city that today we all know and love it began as Charles Towne, founded in 1670. Settlers abandoned this site due to attacks by Native Americans and moved to the coast which then changed names to Charleston after the Revolutionary War in 1776.
The abandoned site is now home to Charles Towne Landing, one of South Carolina’s beautiful historic parks. You can visit this 184 acres, home to 6 miles of walking and biking trails, and 80 acres of gardens. When you arrive, the visitors center offers a 12 room interactive exhibit with the settlement’s history. You will learn how Charleston became what it is today. Outside on the Ashley River is a reproduction of a 17th century cargo ship, Adventure. The historic Legare Waring House is one of Charleston’s most famous sites for weddings and other special events.
Charles Towne Landing is positively a must do for your vacation! On top of getting to learn the history of the city, you can spend your time outside taking in the serene natural beauty.
